Coming from the reservoirs Guadalhorce and Lobo Park, we drive past Antequera and see already from a distance a castle. Quickly it is clear, here we do not only drive past, that we look at ourselves. The Alcazaba is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. It was built in the 14th century by the Moors on the remains of a Roman fortification for protection against the Christian Reconquista. Visits are possible Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am - 6 pm for € 4,- . Or you can buy a combined ticket for € 6,- and visit the Renaissance church Santa María la Mayor, which is located right next to the Alcazaba. This church is already from the outside absolutely worth seeing, especially the west facade to the Plaza de los Escribanos is great. Our recommendation: Eat or drink something in the 'Bienmesabe' opposite and enjoy the wonderful view.
Continuing on the Plaza de los Escribanos, we have a spectacular view over all of Antequera through the Arco de los Gigantes, built in 1585. Here we notice the many churches. Antequera has 40 (!) churches, quite a lot for a small town with 40,000 inhabitants.
We continue to the dolmens, which can be visited free of charge. Here in Antequera are the two largest megalithic structures in Europe, the Dolmen de Menga and de Viera are four meters high and have a diameter of 25 meters. The heaviest megalith weighs an incredible 180 tons. It is hard to imagine how this weight was moved almost 6,000 years ago. A little further on is the Dolmen de El Romeral.
