Once again we have had enough of the rain and say goodbye to Porto. Around noon everything is stowed and we drive towards Nazaré. Since for Nazaré sun is announced, we decide to use the highway A14. The trip over the A1 would have been almost identical in time. But from our point of view, there can only be one A1. And that leads from Cologne via Hamburg to Heiligenhafen on the Baltic Sea.

Freeway usually means that tolls have to be paid. This is annoying enough in itself, but even more annoying are waiting times at the toll booths. But thanks to Thiemo, we got a badge from BIP&GO for our tours. This way we can avoid queuing at the toll booths in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. The whole costs in the months of use 1.70 €. In return, we get the tolls clearly debited from our account. Luxury? Sure, but it was worth it to us.

Lighthouse - Nazaré - Big Wave Surfspot, Portugal

On our drive to Nazaré I think again about the past day. Our conversation with Ilona and Jeroen has made me very thoughtful. Unfortunately, many questions remained unanswered in the aftermath. But unfortunately I missed to ask them at the right moment. Maybe there will be a chance to do so at some point!

In general, this seems to be a day of brooding. I sense within me that something is changing. Somehow I seem to be capable of greater sensations. - Those who have fasted once certainly know what I mean. One simply smells and tastes more intensely. - I just feel more intensely. - At some point I turn on music and search through my old playlists. - At some point I find the Comedian Harmonists, a playlist I once created for my father many years ago. Just like my grandfather, my father loved singing, both were members of the singing club Berghausen, in the Remscheid district of the same name. So it is certainly not surprising that my father, not only, but especially in the shower, warbled his songs. His standard repertoire included the lyrics of the Comedian Harmonists as well as pieces by Knef, Marlene Dietrich, etc. He was also particularly fond of Blond Hans, meaning Hans Albers. Torgit is visibly irritated when I not only play her various songs of these performers, but also sing along. Funnily enough, I'm sure of the lyrics, but I obviously didn't inherit any singing talent. - Since I hold it probably more with Marius:

"...möcht again sing, not beautiful, but horny and loud..."

Suddenly I feel sadness inside me, perhaps something I have pushed away for far too long. - I should call my sister tonight. - Which I will do later.

In Nazaré, our first visit is to the beach "Praia do Norte" - we can park directly on a small cliff above the beach and look out over the sea. The waves look even today, on a calm day more than imposing. The monster seems to sleep - Therefore we enjoy the sun and a baguette roll. I try a few shots with the drone, Torgit goes for a walk on the beach. - Then we head to the fort of São Miguel Arcanjo and the famous lighthouse. Certainly one of the most important hotspots for big wave surfers. The entrance fee of a 1, - € we find well invested.

I make a few more shots, of the video pasted above. But in addition I link a video of Garrett McNamara, here from Nazaré. When this extreme surfer talks about "really big", it is clear that is also BIG, a monstrous wave seems no exaggeration. With all love for the water... We wish good luck to all who want to compete with this monster, they will need it.

*Even as we arrive at the parking lot of the lighthouse, we see from afar an olive-colored Sprinter. Ilona and Jeroen have also come here. When we walk from the lighthouse back up to the parking lot, we are already greeted by Jeroen. We eat something together at a small burger joint. Together we drive to the Vale Paraíso Nature Park, ten minutes north of the lighthouse. Over a glass of Bruichladdich I get the opportunity to ask my missed questions. Now I am curious what I will do with the answers. - More and more, I have the feeling that I'm only at the beginning of a very, very long journey. - But as Torgit always says? "In the end, everything will be fine. And if it's not good, it's not the end."

Realization of the day: It's time for a break - Tomorrow the blog will rest for a day. I need to think.
