Welcome to Cefalù, an enchanted place on the north coast of Sicily! Here in Cefalù, the crystal clear sea meets a rich history and a vibrant culture. If you're ready to be enchanted by the breathtaking beauty of this coastal town, join us on a tour of Cefalù.
Arrival - Let's go to Cefalu!
Mit by car:
Getting to Cefalù is a little adventure in itself, especially if you are traveling with a SpaceCamper, a VW bus, like we are. For us it is important to have our home with us and enjoy the freedom that the small camper offers us. However, we must point out that campers are not allowed in the old town of Cefalù. However, in the low season they are usually tolerated.
So we decided to take the beautiful coastal road from Palermo to get to Cefalù. Along the coast you always drive the deep blue sea to our left. The drive already turns out to be a pleasure and gives us a first taste of what awaits us in this charming coastal town.
After a little over an hour we finally reach Cefalù.
By train:
An alternative and, above all, more sustainable way to get from Palermo to Cefalù is to use the train. This offers a comfortable and scenic journey where you can enjoy the beauty of the Sicilian coast.
From Palermo you can take the train at the main station Palermo Centrale. Trains to Cefalù run regularly and the journey time is about an hour. You have the possibility to choose between different types of trains, including regional trains and intercity trains. The regional trains are usually cheaper, while the intercity trains are faster and have fewer stops.
During the train ride from Palermo to Cefalù you will also have the opportunity to admire the impressive coastal scenery. The train route runs along the Tyrrhenian coast, passing picturesque bays, rolling hills and charming coastal villages. So don't forget to have your camera ready to capture the breathtaking views.
After your arrival at Cefalù train station you can easily walk to the historic center of the city. The train station is just a few minutes walk from the city center and the main attractions.
Ice cream always goes
At the beginning of Corso Ruggero, the charming Piazza Garribaldi awaits you. If you're in the mood for the best ice cream and the most delicious coffee, the 'Antica Porta Terra' is the place for you. Take some time out, enjoy your treat and soak up the flair and bustle of the square. It's the perfect place to just let yourself drift and enjoy the sweet life of Cefalù.
Coffee specialties
If you stroll further along Corso Ruggero in the direction of the cathedral, just before Piazza Duomo you will come to a beautiful old coffee roastery called Torrefazione Serio, Corso Ruggero 122. Here you will not only find delicious coffee, but also a selection of tea, chocolate and other Sicilian specialties. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
The Norman Cathedral
A majestic landmark - Cefalù is famous for its impressive Norman cathedral that proudly towers over the city. This architectural masterpiece is an absolute must-see during your visit. The cathedral is even part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good reason. It was built in 1130 by King Roger II and is an impressive example of Norman architecture. From the outside, the imposing portal impresses, while inside, the simple elegance and stunning mosaics enchant the visitor. In front of the cathedral is a square with cozy cafes, where you can relax after the visit and let the hustle and bustle take effect on you.
The Old Town - A Charming Labyrinth
When you stroll through the old town of Cefalù, you will feel like in an enchanted labyrinth. Here you will find small alleys, picturesque squares and hidden treasures. Stroll along Corso Ruggero, the promenade of Cefalù, and be enchanted by the historic buildings and charming stores.
Pay special attention to Palazzo Osterio Magno Roger II, which at first glance seems unassuming, but holds a fascinating history. Another jewel is the Chiesa di St Stefano Protomartire with its mysterious facade decorated with a skull. This place definitely has that certain something.
But now it's on to Piazza Francesco Crispi, which is located directly opposite. Here you can expect not only a breathtaking view of the sea, but also a real insider tip: You can walk along the cliffs to the Porta Pescara. Hardly anyone knows this, and it really is a fantastic experience!
History and culture
A glimpse into the past. - Cefalù is a city that looks like a painting, with the blue sea in the background and the majestic silhouette of Cefalù Cathedral towering proudly over the city. But this picturesque setting is not only beautiful to look at, it also holds a rich history and fascinating cultural influences.
The history of Cefalù goes back a long way. The city was founded in the 4th century BC by the Greeks and later conquered by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Cefalù became an important center of Norman rule. The imposing Cefalù Cathedral, built in the 12th century, bears witness to this splendid era. Its impressive architecture and elaborate mosaics make it a true jewel of Norman art.
Another highlight is the Teatro Communale Salvatore Cicero in Via Salvatore Spinuzza, 115. This historic theater with about 100 seats has been lovingly restored and looks simply beautiful with its cozy boxes and red velvet. Unfortunately, there are no performances going on at the moment, but hey, that doesn't stop us from visiting the theater for free. They say the acoustics there are sensational.
Maybe you can warble a little and give your own private performance?
We happened to pass by the old Moorish wash fountain 'Lavatoio Via Vittorio Emanuel'. It is located on an underground river that then flows into the sea. You can have a look at it, but honestly, it's not a must. Unless you want to get a glimpse of the washing habits of times past. But every Jeck is different, as they say!
But not only Norman influences characterize Cefalù, Arab traces can also be found in the city. During the Arab rule in the 9th century they left their cultural and architectural imprint. This can be seen, for example, in the winding streets of the old town and the Arab baths, which are among the oldest of their kind in Sicily.
Today in Cefalù you can experience firsthand the fascinating connection between history and culture. The narrow streets of the old town invite you to stroll around and find small stores selling local handicrafts and traditional products. Art lovers should definitely visit the Mandralisca Museum, which houses an impressive collection of paintings and archaeological finds.
Food & Drink
After getting acquainted with the charm of the old town of Cefalù, it's time to discover the culinary delights of this charming coastal city. Cefalù is known for its delicious Sicilian cuisine and offers a variety of traditional dishes that will tantalize your palate.
An absolute must is to try the freshly caught seafood and fish specialties offered in the local restaurants. Here you can enjoy fresh swordfish, squid, shrimp and other delicate seafood dishes prepared with Sicilian flavors and spices.
If you also like to try meat dishes, you should definitely try the local specialty "Arancine". These are fried rice balls filled with various fillings such as ragout, mozzarella or spinach. Perfect for a snack between meals or as an appetizer.
Another highlight of Sicilian cuisine are the various cheeses produced on the island. Be sure to try the "Pecorino Siciliano", a spicy sheep's cheese that goes perfectly with a selection of Sicilian olives and fresh bread.
After you've indulged in the culinary delights, it's time to explore the breathtaking nature and outdoor activities in and around Cefalù.
La Rocca
We admired the La Rocca all day. This imposing rock rises majestically above the old town of Cefalù and the entire bay. And now we finally want to go up! Just follow the signs to the 'Tempio di Diana', a temple ruin that is already over 2000 years old. The entrance fee to the Rocca is just 4€, and for that you get to climb the steep path with stairs. We plan 2 hours for this tour. And guess what? The plateau at the top is surprisingly big!
From up there you have a breathtaking view over the entire bay. But beware, my giddy companion: If you are very brave, you can look down almost vertically on the old town. A sight that will take your breath away! However, don't forget to take enough water with you on this exciting climb. After all, we don't want you to die of thirst halfway up. So pack a bottle and be ready for a little adventure!
Cemetery history
A somewhat unusual, but definitely interesting sight of Cefalù is the Cimitero. This cemetery is rather reminiscent of its own little city of the dead. The Italian cemetery culture here has a very special charm, influenced by the ancient Roman times. The deceased are buried in magnificent mausoleums or sliding tombs. The many mausoleums from the early 19th century are particularly fascinating. A walk through this cemetery is definitely an unusual but rewarding experience. Note, however, the opening hours of 7 am - 1 pm and 2 pm - 6 pm, as the dead also need their rest.
Madonie
If you like hiking, the Madonie Nature Park is a perfect destination. Here you can hike through an impressive landscape with mountains, valleys, rivers and picturesque villages. The Madonie are a true paradise for nature lovers and offer numerous hiking trails with different levels of difficulty.
Water sports and sea
If you prefer to explore the sea, Cefalù offers various water sports such as diving, snorkeling or sailing. You can take a diving course and discover the fascinating underwater world off the coast of Cefalù. Or you can rent a sailboat and take a trip along the coast to explore the picturesque bays and beaches.
The surrounding area
For those who like to make excursions to the surroundings of Cefalù, a visit to the city of Palermo is a good option. Palermo is the capital of Sicily. There you can experience the impressive architecture, the historical sights and the lively hustle and bustle of the city.
Be sure to visit Monreale Cathedral, one of the highlights of Sicilian art with its breathtaking mosaics.
Back in Cefalù, you can end the day leisurely on the beach or on the small harbor pier. The latter is the perfect photo location. From here you have Cefalu in the postcard motif before your eyes.
The golden sandy beach stretches along the coast and invites you to sunbathe and relax. You can sit down in one of the beach bars and enjoy the view of the turquoise sea. Don't forget to order a refreshing granita, a typical Sicilian mixed drink made of ice and fruity syrup.
Nightlife
If you want to explore the nightlife, Cefalù also offers a lively atmosphere in the evening. Along the coastal promenade you will find a variety of restaurants, bars and cafes where you can enjoy a delicious dinner or have a drink in convivial company. The locals are known for their hospitality and will give you a warm welcome.
Services
Want a haircut?
For those who are on site a little longer, the question of a suitable hairdresser may arise. We recommend the great hairdresser & barber 'Arte & Capelli' in Corso Ruggero 91.
It is located directly opposite the former puppet theater. The puppet theater is unfortunately history, but the barber has fortunately survived. The barber there is incredibly friendly and cuts your hair just perfectly. He even speaks a little English! If you are still looking for a vacation apartment in Cefalu, you can also find it with him. And the best: A haircut costs just 16€. Actually, it's a men's barber, but if you ask nicely for a short haircut, he won't turn you down. For long hair, however, we recommend Sansica Parucchieri, Piazza San Francesco 11, Cefalù.
Camper special
Finally, a tip for our campers: Do you have a pile of laundry that urgently needs to be washed? Don't worry, we have the perfect place for you! The laundromat LS Laundry on Via Roma 100 is your savior in case of need. Here you can do your laundry every day from 8am-2pm. Best of all, we could always park right in front of it during lunchtime with no problem. The laundromat is super clean and offers a large washing machine as well as two smaller ones. But that's not all! Very important: There are also two industrial dryers that dry your laundry in just 20 minutes for a measly €2. No more long waiting, but quickly dry laundry - that's a real miracle, right?
